A guerilla war contesting Moroccan sovereignty ended in 1991 with a UN-brokered ceasefire, but the territory remains in dispute. The flag, in Pan-Arab colours, comprises a horizontal tricolour of equal bands of black, white and green with a red equilateral triangle at the hoist. In the white band are the Islamic crescent and star in red. Red represents the blood shed in the struggle for independence, black is for the period of colonization, white is for peace, while green stands for progress.
