The Burger Flag is a unique and brief variant in the vexillological history of the South African Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, or ZAR).
Design: It consists of a red saltire outlined in white, set against a blue background, with a white, five-pointed star positioned dead center.
Significance: Introduced by President Thomas François Burgers in 1874, this flag was intended to replace the traditional Vierkleur. Burgers felt the republic deserved a more distinct and Western-style national banner. However, the flag was highly unpopular with the conservative Volksraad (parliament) and the public, who were deeply attached to their original colors. It was officially discontinued in 1875 after being in use for barely a year.
