Provincial Flags

Provincial Flags

The purpose of South African provincial flags is to serve as symbols of identity and representation for the country's nine provinces.  While all nine provinces have been granted coats of arms, the flags generally function as visual identifiers for provincial government operations, similar to how the national flag represents the state.

Although the national flag has no officially codified colour symbolism, provincial symbols are often derived from local heritage, geography, and history, such as the indigenous flora or topographical features specific to each region.

Mpumalanga's Official Flag: Mpumalanga is the only province with an officially adopted provincial flag, which was introduced in 1996.  Its design features a red Barberton daisy in the canton, green and gold bars representing the land and mineral wealth, and a blue and white diagonal strip symbolizing the province's escarpment.

Other Provinces: The remaining eight provinces do not have official provincial flags. Instead, they are represented by white banners charged with their respective provincial coats of arms.
