John Ward was a privateer turned pirate born in Faversham, Kent, around 1553. After being pressed into service and later deserting, he became a notorious pirate in the Mediterranean.

Ward became obsessed with small birds during his time in North Africa. Locals referred to him as Jack Asfour (Arabic for "Jack Sparrow"), a moniker that likely inspired the character's name, though Ward's nickname was originally "Birdy.”
