It was formed from Scottish volunteers who had fought in the war and chose to remain in the colony. The unit adopted Murray’s family tartan and operated as an oversized battalion with companies in major Transvaal towns.

The Transvaal Scottish saw its first service during the Bambatha Rebellion. “C” company of the Natal Rangers was recruited from Transvaal Scottish members.

In 1914, during the Maritz Rebellion, the regiment was called up again. It saw action and suffered one casualty.

The Transvaal Scottish participated in the invasion of German South West Africa (now Namibia) in 1914. A second battalion (2nd Transvaal Scottish) was raised for this campaign. They encountered German forces near Trekkoppies, resulting in casualties. After the conquest of German South West Africa, the 2nd Battalion was disbanded.

The Transvaal Scottish’s legacy lives on, and its transformation into the Solomon Mahlangu Regiment reflects its enduring significance.
